
In a short time, the National Assembly has issued three important resolutions to implement the North-South high-speed railway project; the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway line and the development of the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City urban railway system.
At the evening meeting on March 29 of the Steering Committee for key projects and national important projects in the railway sector, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the importance of investing in railway projects and developing the railway industry.
Of which, the North-South high-speed railway project has a total length of 1,541km from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, with a design speed of 350km/h. The total preliminary investment is more than 1.7 million billion VND (about 67.34 billion USD). The implementation period is from 2025-2035.
The entire line is newly invested with a double gauge of 1,435 mm, a design speed of 350 km/h, a load capacity of 22.5 tons/axle; has 23 passenger stations, 5 freight stations; transports passengers, meets dual-use requirements for national defense and security, and can transport goods when necessary.
Regarding the North-South high-speed railway project, the Prime Minister requested to try to start construction in December 2026. He assigned the Ministry of Justice to give opinions on applying the simplified procedures in construction, and to issue a Decree on the overall design in early April; at the same time, ministries and branches promptly give opinions after the Ministry of Construction asks for opinions on the draft Decree.
